Guide to Khoramabad

Discover Khorramabad, the capital of Lorestan Province, known for its waterfalls, ancient castles, and green valleys. Sitting in the middle of the Zagros Mountains at about 1,150 meters above sea level, the city is a beautiful mix of nature and history.

Khorramabad has a mild mountain climate, with cool, rainy winters and fresh, green springs. With plenty of rain, rivers, and forests, it’s one of the greenest cities in western Iran, a refreshing contrast to the dry central parts of the country.

The city’s most famous landmark is the Falak-ol-Aflak Castle, a huge fortress from the Sassanid era overlooking the town. Nearby, you can visit the stunning Bisheh Waterfall. Khorramabad is also home to the Lur people, whose music, culture, and traditional dress make the region even more special.

Here are your intercity means of transportation:

By Road: Khorramabad is well-connected by road to cities like Tehran (490 km), Kermanshah, and Ahvaz. Buses, private cars, and taxis are common travel options.

By Train: Khorramabad is not directly on Iran’s major railway network, but the nearest train station is in Dorud, around 85 km away.

By Flight: Khorramabad Airport (KHD) offers domestic flights, mainly to and from Tehran, with limited schedules.

Local transport includes taxis and ride-hailing services, with many natural attractions requiring short drives outside the city.

Khorramabad has a temperate climate and is most beautiful during the spring, when its hills and rivers come alive with greenery and wildflowers.

High season: Spring (March to May), when waterfalls flow abundantly, and the landscape is at its most vibrant. Autumn (September to early November) is also ideal for pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.

Low season: Winter (December to February) is rainy and cool, while summer (late June to August) can be hot, though still milder than central or southern Iran.

✓ Norooz holidays (approximately March 15th to April 2nd) are a peak season in Khorramabad, as local families and travelers come to enjoy the area’s greenery, outdoor attractions, and mild spring weather.
