Guide to Susa (Shush)

Discover Susa (Shush), one of the oldest cities in the world and a true cradle of civilization. Located in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran, at about 80 meters above sea level, Shush was the capital of the Elamite, Achaemenid, and Parthian empires.

The city has a hot desert climate, with very hot summers and short, mild winters. Even with the heat, Susa attracts visitors all year for its history, culture, and spiritual importance.

Highlights include the UNESCO-listed Archaeological Site of Susa, where you can explore the ruins of the ancient city, the Palace of Darius, and the Susa Castle, built by French archaeologists in the 19th century. Susa is also an important Shia pilgrimage site, home to the Tomb of Prophet Daniel in the center of the town.

Here are your intercity means of transportation:

By Road: Susa is accessible via road from major Khuzestan cities like Ahvaz (115 km), Dezful, and Andimeshk, with regular buses and taxis available.

By Train: Susa has a train station connected to the national railway, with services to and from Tehran, Dezful, and other cities.

By Flight: The nearest airport is in Ahvaz (AWZ), offering daily domestic flights. From Ahvaz, Shush can be reached by road in about 1.5 hours.

Local transportation includes taxis and shared minibuses. Most historical sites are located within close proximity and can be explored on foot or with short rides.

Susa experiences long, hot summers and short, mild winters. The best time to visit is during the cooler months.

High season: Winter and early spring (late November to early April), especially around Norooz, when temperatures are pleasant and suitable for archaeological sightseeing and religious visits.

Low season: Summer (late May to early October), when extreme heat (often over 45°C) makes outdoor exploration difficult during the daytime.

✓ Norooz holidays (approximately March 15th to April 2nd) mark a peak season in Susa, attracting domestic visitors interested in Iran’s ancient past and religious significance.
