The Silence Tower, or Dakhmeh, located on the outskirts of Yazd, is a poignant reminder of ancient Zoroastrian burial practices. Constructed on top of barren hills, these circular stone structures date back to the 18th century and were used by Zoroastrians to perform sky burials, a sacred ritual to avoid contaminating the elements of earth, fire, and water.
The towers are built with simplicity and purpose, featuring high walls that encircle a central platform where the deceased were laid out. Exposed to the elements and scavenging birds, the bodies were left to decompose naturally. This process was considered a respectful way to return the body to nature without polluting it.
The site comprises two main towers: one for the deceased of higher social status and the other for commoners. The towers are accessed via a winding path that ascends the hill, offering a solemn journey that reflects the contemplative nature of the burial ritual. From the top, visitors can also enjoy a panoramic view of the arid landscape surrounding Yazd.
The Silence Tower site includes a small Zoroastrian settlement with a prayer hall and several buildings used for funerary rituals. These structures, though simple, provide insight into the community’s way of life and their adherence to ancient customs.
Today, the Silence Tower stands as a testament to Yazd’s rich Zoroastrian heritage. Although the practice of sky burials has ceased, the site remains a significant cultural and historical landmark. Visitors to the Silence Tower can gain a deeper understanding of Zoroastrian traditions and the profound respect for nature that underpins these ancient practices.
